Holidays can be a great time for family and relaxing. Unfortunately, some of the traditions available to families can cause major asthma and allergy problems for sufferers. Christmas trees are one of the biggest culprits for those allergic to mold. Very few people will let mold accumulate in their houses but even the most conscientious rarely think about how mold on a tree will affect someone with allergies.
The constant exposure to mold for weeks on end may cause serious health concerns as well as a need for increased medication, or a trip to the emergency room in a worst case scenario.
What can be done to help prevent this misery? An artificial tree is an ideal solution. Other possibilities include using an air purifier or even washing off the tree before it is brought into the house for the season. My parents always hosed the tree off thoroughly, even if it had been raining, and let it dry in the garage before bringing it indoors. This helped some as a kid, but it was always easier to breath once January came and we retired the tree for another year.
