Spring has definitely arrived in Seattle. Allergy sufferers have been sneezing since the beginning of February as flowers and trees start to bloom. Its the time of year that many people start yearning to spend time outdoors. Allergy suffers may feel the same desire, but sneezing, watery eyes, wheezing, headaches and other symptoms can take the joy out of this beautiful time of year.
Here are some simple tips that can help ease your suffering:
- Avoid spending time outdoors between 5 am and 10 am when pollen counts are the highest.
- Take a shower when you come indoors if you are very allergic to the current pollens.
- At a minimum, take a shower before you go to bed. Pollen sticks to your hair and body during the day.
- Change your pillow case several times a week. Don't leave your head and nose swimming in pollen!
- Keep windows closed, especially to bedrooms.
- Use an air filter to help keep pollen counts down indoors.
- Take an antihistamine daily, 24-hour tablets are available that won't make you nearly as drowsy as Benedryl.
- Use an antihistamine nose-spray such as Astelin.
- Use antihistamine eye drops.
- While they may be unsightly, you can always consider a face mask to help filter out pollen you might breath.
Good luck with your allergy season!
